CDRSEE at the EU - Western Balkan Media Days: Education leads to free media
The two-day conference ‘EU-Western Balkan Media Days’ gathered numerous journalists from the region who discussed the media landscape in this part of the Balkans in panels and workshops. European Commissioner for Policy and Enlargement Johannes Hahn addressed the importance of freeing the media of political influence, highlighting that political leaders and candidate countries are themselves responsible for guaranteeing freedom of the media, security and acceptable living conditions for journalists.
‘Media as a transformative power in the EU accession process’ panel was moderated by journalist Tim Judah; the guest speakers were Chief Executive of Thomson Foundation Nigel Baker, Member of the Board, Styria Media Group Klaus Schweighofer, Media Director, Ora News TV Ilva Tare, Director for Western Balkans at the EU Commission’s Directorate General for European Policy and Enlargement, Genoveva Ruiz Calavera and the Executive Director of the Center for Democracy and Reconciliation of Southeast Europe Zvezdana Kovac who highlighted that the key to strengthening the freedom of media is education, particularly citizen media literacy. Vicinities was presented at the Media Café as the pioneer project of CDRSEE and European Fund For Balkans, as it has been moving media limits in the region for the past six years.
